Do you remember school being a quite place for inner peace?
Me neither.
But that is changing, at least for these school kids in San Fransisco.
8 years ago, in the heart of one of the city’s poorest and most violent neighborhoods, the school was spiraling out of control. Desperate, the district tried a pioneering program called “quiet time”.
The idea was to teach students transcendental meditation, and give them two fifteen minute periods per day to close their eyes and let go of the stresses in their lives.
When they first implemented this years ago, many were skeptic: “I thought it was a joke. I thought this is hippie stuff that didn’t work in the 70’s, so how is it gonna work now?”, the school’s athletic director Barry O’Driscoll says.
4 years later, the results spoke for themselves:
- 79% decrease in suspensions
- 98% increase in attendance
- 0.4% rise in academic performance
